Sharing New Performance Technologies at KCPA’s Tech Summit 2010

The creative team behind Astral Convertible, including John Toenjes of Dance and Alex Betts of the Advanced Visualization Laboratory, presented their work at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Tech Summit on April 13th.  The technologies developed for the reinvented performance of the Trisha Brown contemporary dance masterpiece were wireless networked costumes (inspired by the wearable architectures of Simon Fraser University professor and former visiting artist Thecla Schiphorst and crafted by John Toenjes and CS doctoral student Jihyuk Choi), a gesture-driven machine learning program (developed by IACAT researcher Mary Pietrowicz using Labanotation), and data-driven music and graphics (created by John Toenjes and Alex Betts, respectively).
